SIMPLE EVERYDAY REPLACEMENTS:

  • Replace white bread with whole wheat bread. If you can, cut out all “white” products in general. Opt for whole grain pasta, brown rice, etc.
  • Stop drinking soda and juice. Drink only water. Soda is filled with empty calories, sugar, and carbonated liquid, which can lead to bloating and water retention. Juice might seem like it’s healthy for you, but most juices are packed with sugar too. Just stick with the real fruit itself.
  • Instead of sprinkling your food with salt for added flavor, use Mrs. Dash. It has zero calories and zero mg of sodium. It’s also quite flavorful and delicious.
  • Instead of sugary cakes, brownies, and pies, eat fresh fruit for dessert.
  • When given the option of either taking the stairs, the escalator, or the elevator, take the stairs. It burns calories!
  • Always keep a water bottle with you to refill throughout the day to make sure you’re drinking enough water.
  • Look for lean meats at the grocery store and eat more fish, especially salmon.
  • Instead of frying your foods, grill them or broil them in the oven.
  • Use olive oil instead of canola or vegetable oil. It’s filled with good fats instead of the bad ones.

WEIGHT LOSS TIPS

  • Plan your day ahead of time and write it down. Plan out your meals and calories, and write down when exactly you’re going to work out.
  • Keep a piggy bank in your room. Every time you do something healthy, add some money into it and save that money for a shopping spree when you reach your goal weight.
  • When you feel hungry, decide if you’re really hungry or if you’re just bored. If you’re bored, try to distract yourself or keep yourself busy. Drink some water as well. If you’re truly hungry between meals, eat a healthy snack, such as fresh fruit or veggies.
  • Don’t deprive yourself of anything. That will lead to more binging later. Just keep things in moderation.
  • There’s nothing wrong with eating the entire egg. The cholesterol in the egg yolk is good cholesterol and the yolk is, quite frankly, the most healthy part of the egg. Besides, one large egg is only 70 calories anyway.
  • Don’t just focus on how many calories a food has. 100 calories worth of fruit is much different than 100 calories worth of chocolate. The difference is in the nutrient contents. Always go for the better choice.
  • If you’re hungry, eat something healthy. Don’t starve yourself for the sake of losing weight.
  • Do cardio for at least 30 minutes a day 3-5 days a week.
  • For exercise, do something that you enjoy doing and stick to it.
  • Lifting weights will not make you bulky, girls. Women don’t have enough testosterone in their bodies to bulk up their muscles like that. Weight lifting will tone your body and build muscle, which burns way more calories than fat. So don’t be scared! Start lifting!
  • One of the best ways to motivate yourself is to invest in good workout gear. If you’re a runner, definitely splurge on a good pair of running shoes. They’re important.
  • If you don’t feel like working out, get up and get into your workout clothes. If you still don’t feel like working out, fine. Sit back down. But chances are, you’ll change your mind.
  • Water is your best friend!!! Drink at least 8 glasses of it everyday!
  • Don’t compare yourself to other people when you’re trying to lose weight. Be your own inspiration. Striving to look like someone else will only lead to disappointment because we’re all different.
  • Chew gum between meals. My favorite is Trident Tropical Twist. It’s yummy, long-lasting, and less than 3 calories a piece.
